Living in Larnaca

Larnaca, on the south-east coast, is the capital of Larnaca district and the third-largest urban area in Cyprus after Nicosia and Limassol. It is home to Larnaca International Airport, the Republic's busiest, and to the island's second-busiest port. Services, tourism included, employ most of the workforce.

The town is built on the site of ancient Kition. Its best-known sights sit close together: the Church of Saint Lazarus, the medieval fort, and Finikoudes, the palm-lined seafront promenade. Just south-west of the centre lies the Salt Lake, where flamingos winter, with the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque on its shore.

Most residents are Greek Cypriots, alongside Greek, Romanian and Bulgarian citizens, a British community and people from South Asia. Many British residents live in the villages around the town, such as Oroklini. There are no trains in Cyprus. Buses run by Cyprus Public Transport cover the town, the airport and the district, but most people drive, and motorways connect Larnaca with Nicosia, Limassol and Ayia Napa.

The centre and the coast are mostly apartments, from older blocks near Finikoudes to newer buildings along the bay. Houses and villas are more common in the suburbs and former villages. Neighbourhoods

Centre and Finikoudes
The old centre behind the palm-lined promenade, with the Church of Saint Lazarus, the marina, shops and cafés. Mostly apartments, many within walking distance of the beach.
Skala and Mackenzie
Skala, the seafront quarter south of the medieval fort, grew up around the old port and was home to the Turkish Cypriot community until 1974. Further south, the Mackenzie beach area has beach bars, restaurants, a windsurfing centre and apartments close to the airport.
Dhekelia Road
The coast road running north-east around Larnaca Bay towards the British base at Dhekelia, lined with hotels, apartment complexes and beaches.
Oroklini and Livadia
Former villages north-east and north of the centre, merged into Larnaca municipality in 2024. Oroklini, behind Oroklini Lake, has a large British community; both have more houses than the centre.
Aradippou
A separate municipality just north-west of Larnaca and one of the largest towns in the district, mainly residential, with quick access to the motorway to Nicosia.
Perivolia and Kiti
Coastal villages south of the airport, now part of Dromolaxia–Meneou municipality, with houses and villas and quieter beaches around Cape Kiti.

Practical information

  • Airport: Larnaca International Airport, run by Hermes Airports, lies on the south-western edge of the town next to the Salt Lake. Cyprus Public Transport buses link it with the centre; Kapnos Airport Shuttle runs to Nicosia and the Limassol Airport Express to Limassol.
  • Getting around: Cyprus Public Transport runs the town and district buses. There is no railway in Cyprus, so most residents rely on a car.
  • Schools: English-language private schools include The American Academy Larnaca, founded in 1908, and the Larnaka campus of PASCAL.
  • Healthcare: residents are covered by the General Healthcare System (GeSY), which includes Larnaca General Hospital and many private doctors and clinics that have joined the system.
