Living in Ruse

Ruse lies on the right bank of the Danube in north-eastern Bulgaria, facing the Romanian town of Giurgiu. The Danube Bridge, a combined road and rail crossing, links the two, and Bucharest is about 70 km to the north.

It is Bulgaria's largest port on the Danube and an industrial city, with industrial zones on its east and west sides and the state-owned Rousse Free Zone near the bridge. Manufacturing includes clothing and textiles, food processing, chemicals and machinery. The University of Ruse "Angel Kanchev" is the main university.

The centre is known for its preserved buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when Ruse was one of the leading economic and cultural centres of the new Bulgarian state. Bulgarian is the language of daily life and of all dealings with the authorities.

Most homes are apartments: older buildings in and around the centre, and large estates such as Druzhba and Charodeyka built from the 1970s onwards. Former villages on the edge of the city, such as Dolapite, have more houses. Since Bulgaria joined the euro on 1 January 2026, homes are priced in euros.

Neighbourhoods

Centre
The historic centre near the Danube, with Svoboda Square, the theatre, the opera and many of the city's protected buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Mostly apartments in older buildings.
Druzhba
Three estates of apartment blocks (Druzhba 1, 2 and 3) in the south of the city, built from the 1970s, with supermarkets, a clinic and trolleybus and bus links to the centre. Druzhba 3 lies near the TV tower.
Charodeyka
A 1970s estate on the southern edge of the city, split into northern and southern parts, with shops, schools and trolleybus connections to the centre.
Dolapite
A former village about 7 km west of the centre, now a district of Ruse with its own school, church and bus links.

  • The nearest large airport is Bucharest Henri Coandă in Romania, about 80 km north across the Danube Bridge. In Bulgaria, Varna and Sofia airports are the main options.
  • Ruse is a rail and road hub, with trains to Sofia and Varna and intercity buses from the South and East bus stations.
  • City buses and trolleybuses are run by the municipality.
  • UMBAL "Kanev", the university hospital, dates from 1865 and is regarded as the oldest civilian hospital in Bulgaria.
