Living in Varna

Varna is Bulgaria's third-largest city and the largest on its Black Sea coast. It is a port city first: the Port of Varna, shipping and logistics, tourism, and a large public sector of universities and hospitals account for much of the work. In summer the resorts on the coast to the north, such as Golden Sands and St. Constantine and Helena, fill up, but the city itself is busy all year.

It is also a student city. The Medical University of Varna teaches medicine, dental medicine and pharmacy in English, which brings international students to the city, alongside the Technical University, the University of Economics and the Naval Academy. Bulgarian is the language of daily life and of all dealings with the authorities.

Varna Airport, run by Fraport Twin Star under a state concession, has scheduled and charter flights to many European cities. City buses and trolleybuses cover the five districts, and trains run inland from Varna station to Sofia.

Most homes are apartments, from panel-block estates of the socialist period to newer brick buildings. Houses and villas are found mainly on the northern edge of the city, around Vinitsa and in the villa zones towards the resorts. Since Bulgaria joined the euro on 1 January 2026, homes are priced in euros.
